Google Stock Approaches $600 as Web Ad Spending Soars


Oct. 2 (Bloomberg) -- Google Inc. shares may surpass $600 for the first time as investors bet the world's most popular Internet search engine will capture more sales from companies shifting advertising spending to the Web.

Google, which began trading at $85 in 2004, has the sixth- highest stock price in the U.S. and has surged 27 percent this year. The shares rose $1.84 to $584.39 at 4 p.m. New York time on the Nasdaq Stock Market and earlier reached $596.81.

'No rule changes' for Google AdWords


Google is to make no changes to the trademark rules for its AdWords bidding procedure, it has emerged.

A four-year legal battle was this week settled out of court by American Blind & Wallpaper Factory, reports Reuters.

The firm had previously charged Google with trademark abuse by allowing rival companies to bid on paid search terms relating to its name.

GPL 3 author wants companies like Google to open up internal-use patches


Addressing an audience at the Open Source Business Conference, Free Software Foundation (FSF) lawyer Eben Moglen discussed the upcoming version 3 of the General Public License (GPL 3). Moglen anticipates broad adoption of the license even among open-source projects that do not use the current version of the GPL. Moglen also took the opportunity to nudge Google and encouraged the company to release the source code of open source application improvements used internally.

Google to FCC: Get the Rules Right For Spectrum Auction


As the FCC considers which rules will govern one of the last great spectrum auctions in February 2009, some of the most interesting proposals are coming from startups and companies outside the wireless business. The latest suggestion comes from Google, which thinks the FCC should adopt an auction process much like the one it uses to sell advertising via its AdWords. That way winning bidders who end up not using as much spectrum as they pay for could reaction it to other companies. That would certainly make for a more efficient use of the spectrum.
