Use your Mac to upload photos!

Now there are two ways to upload your photos to Picasa Web Albums -- from directly within iPhoto or using drag-and-drop from a standalone application.

For iPhoto users
The Picasa Web Albums Exporter lives right inside iPhoto. Select photos, choose Export in the File or Share menu, and upload them directly to your web album.

For a standalone application
Use the Picasa Web Albums uploader -- just drag photos from the Finder and click the Upload button.

Requirements:
- You must have a Picasa Web Albums account to use the Exporter or Uploader.
- Requires OS X 10.4 or later.

Google is on the brink of buying noted video game maker Valve Software, according to a report in The Inquirer that cites "well-placed sources."

Bellevue, Wash.-based Valve rose to prominence through games such as its Half Life series, but The Inquirer's Charlie Demerjian speculates the reason Google would be most interested in the company is its Steam Powered technology, a multipurpose online hub with throngs of users.

That rationale makes some sense to me as well, in part because getting into the video game business in and of itself doesn't sound terribly well aligned with Google's mission "to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful." Steam is an online foundation for selling and distributing games, updating patches, enabling multiplayer online chat, and using digital rights management to control who has permission to use elements like game versions or game terrain.

According to the Wall Street Journal (which charges $90 per year to access full articles), Google’s Android plans aren’t moving quite as fast as the company had hoped.

Android chief Andy Rubin told the Wall Street Journal, “This is where the pain happens. We are very, very close.”

The slowdown appears to be a result of copious reams of red tape from carriers coupled with constant changes to the Android platform frustrating developers.

Google today sped ahead in the web search domain once again with the release of the Google Earth API. Yes, the recent improvements to Live Maps were impressive, but today the search giant has put Google Earth into the browser. Microsoft made this move first, completely disregarding Google's client release of Google Earth, with its Virtual Earth API and browser plug-in. Google's Windows-only release today seems to focus on 3D, and speed. The performance is noticeably superior to Microsoft's, but there are still obvious kinks that need to be worked out.

Maybe it was Microsoft's annual revenue shooting past $50 billion (along with Google's quarterly slump), but something seems to have brought out the claws in company Chairman Bill Gates. When asked by the New York Times about the threat Google poses in terms of phone software, Gates said the following:

The latest upgrade to the open source portal software integrates Google Gadgets mini-apps and makes personalizing individual portlets easier

JBoss is introducing an upgrade to its open source portal software on Monday that features integration with Google Gadgets.

With Google Gadgets, developers can drop Google Gadget components onto a portal. These are mini-applications that work with the Google homepage, Google Desktop, or any page on the Web. Examples of Gadgets include a calendar, a weather globe, or a media player.

At an event in Google's New York offices on Tuesday, the company unveiled a new initiative to make its Google Earth geography software a more accessible tool for nonprofit organizations.

"We're now officially launching a program called Google Earth Outreach," said John Hanke, director of Google Earth and Maps. "Google is stepping up and validating this as a bona fide program that will be staffed in our group."

Google Earth Outreach is now live, and several downloadable layers from the program's inaugural partners--the Global Heritage Fund, Earthwatch and Fair Trade Certified--are now available online.

Internet video site YouTube is to test a new video fingerprinting technology to address copyright concerns.

The software will identify unique attributes in video clips and could be used to prevent copyrighted clips from being uploaded without permission.

YouTube executive Chris Maxcy told news agency Reuters that the tool would be tested in a month's time.

NEW YORK (AP) - CDC Corp., a maker of software and operator of the China.com site, said Tuesday it expanded its partnerships with Google Inc. and China Mobile Ltd.

Under the agreement with Google, the search engine launched video ads, called Video Adsense, in the English language portion of the site. Google will also place ads on the China.com portal to promote its search engine.
