Google’s voice recognition search application for the iPhone, originally set for launch on Friday, will likely go live sometime Monday, we’ve heard from a source with knowledge of the situation.

Google was under the impression that the application would be live on the App Store on Friday (obviously, since they pushed all significant press attention to it). Sometime Friday they found out Apple wouldn’t be pushing it, despite the fact that Google submitted it for review earlier in the week and got a thumbs up for Friday. One source says they’ve had little direct contact with Apple during the review, instead getting their updates via the standard iPhone developer tool, which has said “in review” for the last few days.

Who knows why Apple delayed the application, or why they tend to treat every application developer equally poorly.

SAN FRANCISCO--Yahoo on Wednesday released a preview version of a free new iPhone application called OneConnect that can centralize communications and social-networking activity.

"OneConnect allows everybody to keep connected to the persons they care about. It's a socially connected address book," said said Marco Boerries, executive vice president, Yahoo Connected Life, in a speech here at the CTIA Wireless show. "The address book now comes to life."

Google ( NSDQ: GOOG) shared its plans today for how it will distribute applications mobile phones running its Android operating system, and it sounds startlingly similar to Apple's ( NSDQ: AAPL) App store. Google wrote today on the Android developer blog that it will be called Android Market, "an open content distribution system that will help end users find, purchase, download and install various types of content on their Android-powered devices."

Of course, the marketplace is designed to solve a critical problem that developers face?getting in front of the consumer. It will work like this: Google will make the content available on an open service hosted by Google, and create a feedback and rating system similar to YouTube. To get your content in the market, developers will have to follow three steps: register as a merchant, upload and describe content, then publish it.

Google I/O The second loudest cheer was for the opening of Google App Engine. The loudest was for a compass built into an unnamed mobile handset running Android.

This morning, during an extended keynote speech at Google's I/O developer conference in San Francisco, Android engineering director Steve Horowitz demonstrated the fledging mobile OS on a mystery handset with a Synaptics touch screen, showing off several applications for the first time. Among these was a version of Street View that moves through Google's virtual world in response to the physical movements of the phone itself.

"With a flick of the finger, you can navigate around," Horowitz said, as he used the device's touch screen to wander through Street View. But then he switched to "compass-mode," tapping into the device's built-in compass and accelerometer. He could spin through those virtual streets simply by spinning his phone. "This is one of my favorite new features on Street View," he said, as applause erupted from several hundred developers. "The device can actually track my movements."

Google App Engine lets you run your web applications on Google's infrastructure. App Engine applications are easy to build, easy to maintain, and easy to scale as your traffic and data storage needs grow. With App Engine, there are no servers to maintain: You just upload your application, and it's ready to serve your users.

You can serve your app using a free domain name on the appspot.com domain, or use Google Apps to serve it from your own domain. You can share your application with the world, or limit access to members of your organization.

App Engine costs nothing to get started. Sign up for a free account, and you can develop and publish your application for the world to see, at no charge and with no obligation. A free account can use up to 500MB of persistent storage and enough CPU and bandwidth for about 5 million page views a month.

During the preview release of Google App Engine, only free accounts are available. In the near future, you will be able to purchase additional computing resources.

Google announced on Monday the release of Google App Engine, which allows outside developers to build and run their applications on top of Google’s infrastructure, making it easier for them to focus on the applications, rather than on system administration and maintenance, the company said.

Pete Koomen, product manager at Google, said in a statement: “Google has spent years developing infrastructure for scalable web applications. We’ve brought Gmail and Google search to hundreds of millions of people worldwide, and we’ve built out a powerful network of datacenters to support those applications. Today we’re taking the first step in making this infrastructure available to all developers.”

Online apps go offline

Google is introducing new code to allow Google Docs to be used offline.

Users will be offered offline access to docs.google.com over the coming weeks allowing them to work on documents when web access is unavailable.

On reconnecting to the internet any changes will be automatically synchronised, the company said in a statement.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer was one of the featured speakers at the Gartner Symposium in Orlando yesterday. His appearance wasn't streamed live, but archived video is now available via this page.

One of the big topics was the trend toward software applications being delivered as online services. In that specific area, Ballmer disputed Gartner analyst Yvonne Genovese's assertion that some of Microsoft's efforts look a lot like what Google has done. She was alluding to its Google Apps and Google Docs & Spreadsheets services.

Global consulting firm Capgemini believes that GoogleApps--Google's online alternative to Microsoft Office--appeals to more than college students and small businesses.

The two companies on Monday announced a partnership under which Capgemini will offer desktop support and installation services to large corporations that use Google Apps Premier Edition.

Google Apps--which includes Web-based Gmail, a calendar, and document editor--can fill a role in large corporations even though the product suite is used mainly by individuals and small businesses, according to Capgemini executives.

Google may finally be preparing to re-launch wiki service Jotspot, nearly a year after it acquired the company. Jotspot has not allowed new customer registrations since the acquisition was announced, although existing customers retained access to their accounts.

Google Operating System noted that the Jotspot discussion board and help desk have moved over to Google.

Google Inc. said Thursday that it had added five universities to its roster of customers for Google Apps, a collection of Web-based programs that compete with Microsoft Corp.'s products.

The University of North Carolina in Greensboro and the University of Texas in San Antonio are among the institutions that will start using the product, Mountain View, Calif.-based Google said. Google Apps includes e-mail, word processing and spreadsheet programs.

The search king's free Web-based business software has 100,000 small-biz clients. But will big corporate fish bite for a paid "premier" version?

Noah Sachs, general counsel, business development director, and resident computer expert at a biotechnology startup named Enzymatics, has one word for the holdouts who still use Microsoft Office to create documents and spreadsheets. They're "curmudgeons," he sniffs.

Most of the people at the 10-employee company use Web-based software from Google (GOOG) for these tasks and e-mail. Since they're all delivered online, "any computer I sit down at becomes my computer," says Sachs. Enzymatics, based in Beverly, Mass., is experimenting with other Google software, too, including a specialized search engine that combs competitors' Web sites for information on rival products and prices. To build such a tool from scratch using Microsoft (MSFT) software would have entailed buying multiple product licenses. "I have enough on my plate without having to worry about that," he says.

Google is adding JotSpot, which the company acquired in October 2006, to the Google Apps, according to Dave Girouard, vice president and general manager of Google Enterprise. Google Apps currently includes mail, calendar, instant messaging, Web page creation, documents and spreadsheets.

JotSpot will bring wikis and easy to build team Web sites to the suite. The company has been in the process of moving JotSpot to the Google infrastructure to gain reliability and scale efficiencies, Girouard said, but he didn’t disclose when JotSpot would become available.

Google has rolled out a new e-mail migration tool for prospective business customers looking to switch their e-mail management tasks over to Google Apps. The new self-service mail migration tools enable system admins to copy existing mail from an IMAP server over to GMail.

The tools are available only for Google Apps Premier and Education Editions, individuals looking to migrate from an IMAP set up to GMail will still have to make the move by hand.

With its empire expanding, the search giant can have an unprecedented breadth of knowledge about you. Can we trust it with so much data?

From search to e-mail, from calendars to spreadsheets and text documents, more and more of what PC users read and create flows through one firm: Google.

Google's pending purchase of online advertising giant DoubleClick (the deal awaited Federal Trade Commission approval as we went to press) will give it access to yet more information: the Web browsing histories collected by millions of DoubleClick cookies. Combine that data with what Google already knows through its homegrown services--Google Apps, Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Maps, Google Desktop, and many others--and the company has the potential to know more about you than any one entity ever has.

Opinion: An integration between the two platforms would help them take on their common competitor: Microsoft

As this year's WWDC (Worldwide Developer Conference) approaches, Apple fans are furiously speculating on what kind of news will be dropped on us in San Francisco. We already know about the Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard preview, and no doubt Apple CEO Steve Jobs will have something to say about the iPhone. But from what I know about the players and the IT landscape, I think Jobs has another "just one more thing" up his sleeve.

I've been looking at what Apple and its partners need to do to fill gaps in their product line-up. At the moment, I think the Macintosh platform's biggest weakness is its reliance on Microsoft Office for productivity software. Microsoft has always built solid products for Mac -- but they were always just a bit behind or somehow incompatible with their Windows equivalents. Entourage does 90 percent of what Outlook does, but it lacks features right where it hurts: In enterprise settings. Word for Mac doesn't have the same Macro or OOXML support as the PC version. PowerPoint files are still not 100 percent compatible between platforms.

Basically, Apple and its customers get the short end of the Microsoft stick.

Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) continues to subtly press its office productivity software into the hands of the masses, consumers and businesses. And yet, the company continues to say it is not targeting, as a whole, Microsoft's Office franchise, which requires a decent chunk of cash to purchase as well as installation on a PC (or network) to function.

Google's Gmail (email), Calendar (scheduling), Docs (word precessing) and Spreadsheet (calculations) require nothing but a web browser and an internet connection, while giving many "light" users the same capabilities as the Microsoft Office package. All for free.
