Yahoo Announces Major Update to Yahoo Calendar: Leverages Zimbra Technology

Yahoo today announced a closed beta of a major update to its online calendaring application that will feature a tighter integration with Yahoo Mail and other Yahoo properties. The new calendar is based on the Zimbra platform, which Yahoo acquired in 2007, and will support both the iCalendar and CalDAV standards for exchanging information with other calendaring services.

Among the new features are the ability to enhance your calendar with photos from Flickr, a built-in to-do list, and support for drag and drop. Yahoo Calendar can now also send out reminders for important events by email, IM, or SMS.

In addition, Yahoo is now making it easier for groups to keep track of common activities by extending the sharing features in Yahoo Calendar.

Google Calendar Flaw Exposes Any Gmail User’s Real Name

Exploit reveals the ugly side of keeping data in the cloud

A bug found in the Google Calendars beta exposes the real name of anyone registered with a Gmail account.

Originally posted at the Securiteam blog, the bug allows anyone with a Google Calendar account to reveal other Gmail account holders’ (registered) real names simply by hitting the “back” button after sending an invite.

Internal testing by DailyTech finds that the bug is still active at the time of this writing.

Worse, reveals Canadian blogger Holden Karau, is that the bug works for any account in Gmail’s system, including private Gmail accounts operating under other domains.

Google, Clearwire unveil partnership

Rumors circulating on chat boards last month suggested that Google -- looking to make a big push into the wireless business -- could make a bid for Kirkland-based Clearwire. Nothing really came of the chatter.

But today the two companies announced a partnership by which Clearwire will distribute some Google applications -- including Gmail and Google Calendar -- to its customers.

JotSpot joining Google Apps revolution

Google is adding JotSpot, which the company acquired in October 2006, to the Google Apps, according to Dave Girouard, vice president and general manager of Google Enterprise. Google Apps currently includes mail, calendar, instant messaging, Web page creation, documents and spreadsheets.

JotSpot will bring wikis and easy to build team Web sites to the suite. The company has been in the process of moving JotSpot to the Google infrastructure to gain reliability and scale efficiencies, Girouard said, but he didn’t disclose when JotSpot would become available.

Google Apps released for internet providers and portals

Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) continues to subtly press its office productivity software into the hands of the masses, consumers and businesses. And yet, the company continues to say it is not targeting, as a whole, Microsoft's Office franchise, which requires a decent chunk of cash to purchase as well as installation on a PC (or network) to function.

Google's Gmail (email), Calendar (scheduling), Docs (word precessing) and Spreadsheet (calculations) require nothing but a web browser and an internet connection, while giving many "light" users the same capabilities as the Microsoft Office package. All for free.
