Yahoo announces social networking app for iPhone
 SAN FRANCISCO--Yahoo on Wednesday released a preview version of a free new iPhone application called OneConnect that can centralize communications and social-networking activity. "OneConnect allows everybody to keep connected to the persons they care about. Google Launches Lively to Create a Virtual World Across Social Networks
 Google has just launched Lively, a new social network built around the concept of each user creating an avatar and a personal virtual room that can be embedded anywhere on the Web. In essence, Google is looking to create a massive distributed virtual world, where every Google account can have its own avatar that can be used wherever a Lively virtual room is present – for example, on a blog, a social networking profile, or a Web page. Here’s a closer look at what Google is launching, how it works, and how it might fit into Google’s larger social networking plans: Getting Started To use Lively, you do need to sign up using a Google account and download a browser plug-in. From there, you are able to create your own avatar – starting from a “template” character which then has customizable attributes like skin tone, hair color, and eye colors. You can also dress your character with clothing and accessories. In turn, you’re now ready to use Lively wherever you encounter a room on the Web by signing into it with your virtual account. MySpace Chooses Google Gears To Help Social Network
 Los Angeles (dbTechno) - MySpace has announced that they are going to be using Google Gears to help make their social-networking site easier for users to navigate through and use. MySpace users will see an installation for Google Gears appear the next time that they go into their mailbox. It is available for all MySpace users as of today, and will be a quick and easy install.  The intruder appears relatively harmless--and now halted--but raises security concerns. Google's Orkut social networking site appeared to have been hit by a relatively harmless worm, but one that demonstrated the continuing vulnerability of Web applications. Some Orkut users received an e-mail telling them they had been sent a new scrapbook entry -- a type of Orkut message -- on their profile from another Orkut user. They only had to view their profile to become infected by the worm, which added them to an Orkut group, "Infectados pelo Vírus do Orkut," wrote the blogger Kee Hinckley on his site TechnoSocial. Google gets set for spectrum race
 Google said on Friday it would apply to bid in the US Federal Communications Commission's auction of 700MHz band wireless spectrum. If it wins, it could build a wireless network for that spectrum on its own, or partner with others to build and operate such a network. Either way, Google could put its brand on millions of mobile devices that use the network. It would also be able to control the internet experience on the devices and how much people would pay — or not pay — for the services. Google builds very own Ethernet switches
 Could rattle networking biz Google seems to be building its very own Ethernet switches. But you already knew that. We told you in June. On Friday, a blog post from telecom/datacom research outfit Nyquist Capital breathlessly announced that Google is using Google-designed switches to link servers inside its top-secret data centers. "It is our opinion that Google has designed and deployed home-grown 10GbE switches as part of a secret internal initiative that was launched when it realized commercial options couldn’t meet the cost and power consumption targets required for their data centers," wrote Nyquist analyst Andrew Schmitt. Inbox 2.0: Vision And Perhaps Confusion At Google And Yahoo
 A much discussed blog posting this morning comes from Saul Hansell at the New York Times who spoke to both Google and Yahoo about their plans to turn their email products into social networks in a manner of speaking: "Inbox 2.0." The plans discussed in the post suggest some clever and creative thinking about how both companies can leverage their existing products and integrate them with other properties. Is my Facebook profile really worth $238 to Microsoft?
 Only if it were worth $237 (£117) - or even $237.99 - to Google. The Redmond giant was this week in talks to acquire part of the social networking site, which Nielsen/NetRatings said on Tuesday is the most popular in the UK, with 6.5 million users (up sixfold since December), ahead of MySpace with 6.3 million (up 20%) and Bebo (4.5 million, up 64%).What Microsoft is after is a slice of the hottest site online, and it is prepared to pay somewhere between $300m and $500m (£125m to £250m) for a 5% stake. That would value the site as a whole at between $6bn and $10bn - and the site says it has 42m users worldwide. The upper valuation values each of them at a tidy $238.09 each. Google invests in Chinese social network
 Google buys stake in Tianya.cn, China's third largest social network, as it tries to turn around fortunes in the country Google has taken a stake in Tianya.cn, the Chinese social networking site, broadening its presence in the world’s second-largest online market. A spokesman for the search company confirmed that Google has invested in Tianya.cn, but declined to give further details. Reports in China suggested the holding could be as much as 60 per cent. Google's 700MHz plan versus the laws of physics
 Conditions that Google wants the FCC to impose on eventual buyers of the 700MHz spectrum have generated much interest, but higher laws than any that might be imposed by the FCC - the laws of physics - might determine the future of its proposals. Google's highly publicised and controversial letter to the FCC says that 'the only way to guarantee new broadband platforms is through open platforms." Google discuses four types of platforms that it says "should be mandated for commercial spectrum": open applications, open devices, open services, and open networks. Under its open networks proposal, ISPs would be able to interconnect their own network facilities with the last-mile towers of the wireless providers. Sprint, Google Hook Up For WiMax Services
 For Google, the deal provides access to Sprint WiMax subscribers who will presumably be eager to use the Web-based tools on the go, at no or little cost. Seeking to build on the momentum for its ambitious nationwide WiMax network, Sprint Nextel(S) said Thursday it will partner with Google to provide users of the network with Web services from the search giant, including e-mail, chat, and social networking tools. However much is in your Facebook, it ain't a new Google
 There's an ancient adage in the computer industry - it may have originated at Microsoft - which says: 'Always eat your own dog food'. What it means is that if you are writing software other people are going to use, then you must use it yourself. If you're going to ask other people to commit their time, data and perhaps even sanity to using your product, you should take the same risks yourself. An analogous injunction ought to apply to technology commentators: do not write about something unless you've used it yourself. It was in this spirit that I signed up to Facebook, the social networking service, some time ago. As it happens, I seem to have signed up just at the moment that Facebook reached its tipping point and switched into a phase of exponential growth. It's been fascinating watching from the inside as more and more of my colleagues and acquaintances sign up and confide their innermost thoughts to a few thousand close 'friends'. Google, Skype Could Benefit If FCC Backs 'Openness" For 700 MHz Auction
 "Openness" means a service provider won't be able to dictate which devices and services can be used on the network in the way cellular carriers currently do with their networks. Providers of Internet telephony services seem to have won a battle in the war against conventional wired and wireless telephone service this week when FCC chairman Kevin Martin called for "openness" in draft rules for the upcoming auction of radio spectrum in the 700 MHz band. Companies like Google and eBay's Skype applauded the move. Google called Martin's new public stance a "favorable development". eBay's CEO supported Martin, too. Google and eBay and other technology companies are increasingly facing off against entrenched telecom firms like AT&T and Verizon Communications(VZ). The auction, which won't take place for several months, is shaping up as a major battlefield between IP technology firms and traditional telephone companies. Mosh, Yahoo’s New Social Network Initiative
 Here’s a juicy tip - we’ve been hearing about a new Yahoo social network initiative called Mosh, which is at mosh.yahoo.com but can only be accessed from inside the Yahoo offices. If you happen to be using the guest wifi at Yahoo, you should be able to access the site, although this may be shut down soon.
