Google has upgraded its Search Appliance for enterprises and government agencies who want a Google-like search for their documents. The new Search Appliance lets employees subscribe to e-mail alerts for topics and documents of interest. Google also offers a spell checker in six languages for Search Appliance.

Google on Wednesday began offering an upgraded version of its Search Appliance. The hardware targets enterprises and government agencies that want a Google-like Web search for office documents.

The upgraded Google Search Appliance searches up to 10 million documents. That's the same document storage capacity as the previous version that was offered in a five-box rack. A larger, 12-box version can store, manage and search up to 30 million documents.

In the consumer space, Google Earth and Google Maps go hand-in-hand. Now the same goes for Google Earth for the enterprise.

Business and government users of Google Earth for the enterprise can now view their organizations' geospatial data in 2-D on a browser behind the firewall.

As a part of the product upgrade, Google opened a "special" Maps API for the enterprise. That means administrators can now embed the Google Maps 2-D view into any Web application and create mashups with information from external databases, spreadsheets and other data sources, Noah Doyle, product manager for enterprise geo products, told internetnews.com.

Google has launched a search engine service for small businesses that costs as little as $100 (£49) a year to run.

Google Custom Search Business is aimed at the millions of businesses that have a web presence but offer users no way of searching their website.

Dave Girouard, vice president and general manager, Google Enterprise, said: "While many of these businesses invest in search advertising and search engine optimization to help customers find their business, customers are left on their own to navigate content once they land on a site.

Google's chief executive, Eric Schmidt, has acknowledged that providing applications and other services to business customers will be an important strategy for maintaining growth of the company.

Speaking at a press event in Paris on Tuesday, Schmidt responded to a question on how Google intends to maintain its phenomenal growth rates when the stream of ad revenues from old media to new media, which has sustained the company so far, begins to plateau. "Small businesses and universities are likely to become a significant business for Google as [they] use our leverage in terms of sales and infrastructure," he said.
