Look out Windows, here comes Google -- and iPod

While looking through the latest quarterly results from Microsoft and Google last week, it struck me that Google's companywide revenues had, for the first time, exceeded the sales in Microsoft's Client division, the unit that makes Windows for PCs. That's no small feat, and I decided to explore the competitive and symbolic implications in this week's Software Notebook, in Monday's newspaper.

As detailed in the story, there are all sorts of qualifiers that come into play when making that comparison. It's definitely not an apples-to-apple kind of thing. But the financial milestone underscores Google's revenue growth and illustrates why Microsoft has been trying to further diversify its business, in areas including Internet search and online advertising.

Microsoft and Google search for resolution

Google takes action against Windows Vista's in-built search tool

Microsoft has succumbed to pressure from competition authorities to make it easier for Vista users to override its built-in desktop search tool.

Search rival Google had alleged Microsoft's Vista operating system disadvantages other search software by making it difficult for users to use non-Microsoft desktop-search software.

Google claimed in a white paper sent to both the Department of Justice and the US attorneys general that Microsoft's desktop search tool is almost impossible to turn off and affects a computer's performance when running a non-Microsoft search tool.

Antitrust: Google's statement on Windows Vista

Google spokesman Ricardo Reyes offered this statement today in response to my inquiry about the company's objections to Windows Vista's desktop search tool.

"Microsoft's current approach with Vista desktop search violates the consent decree and and limits consumer choice. The search boxes built throughout Vista are hard-wired to Microsoft's own desktop search product, with no way for users to choose an alternate provider from these visible search access points. Likewise, Vista makes it impractical to turn off Microsoft's search index."

Reyes declined to comment further.

Google undermining trust in Microsoft?

Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) has had a good time recently nipping at the heels of what many consider its largest enemy -- Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT). While I'm not agreeing that Microsoft is in Google's direct cross-hairs more than other companies, the area of customer security and privacy is one area where both companies have taken potshots at one another recently. Google has taken criticism for the immense privacy breaches it apparently is making available to the world, while Microsoft's Windows operating system and other software constantly have security issues, from malware to spyware.
