As the Web becomes more sophisticated and audio and video becomes a more important part of our online lives, we need something that will help us sift through the junk and find what we’re looking for in all that content. To address that, Google announced Wednesday that it has launched audio indexing in Google Labs.

Dubbed GAudi, the new service is designed to work with YouTube, and will catalog all the words uttered during an audio or video clip. Once collected, the transcript will be added to a searchable database that can be accessed in much the same way you search for text-based websites.

But before you start wondering if Google has indexed your latest vlog, don’t get too excited. According to the company, GAudi is only in beta at this point and during that time, it will only index audio and video from political sources.

Within hours of being launched Monday, Cuil - a new search engine created by former top Google engineers - was already being touted in the blogosphere as the next Google killer. But unless Cuil (pronounced ‘cool’) can develop an ad platform to rival Google’s, the startup will have a difficult time challenging the search giant.

The comparisons to Google (GOOG) were inevitable. Cuil was founded by several lead engineers from Google, including Anna Patterson, chief architect of the company’s TeraGoogle search index. Cuil also claims its search algorithm scans 120 billion web pages - three times the number that Google sifts through. And Cuil’s spare start page is reminiscent of Google’s minimalist home page.

The launch of Cuil certainly raised eyebrows at Google. Though the company would not comment on Cuil, Google’s web search team stuck it to the small search startup on Monday with a blog post that begins, “We knew the web was big….We’ve known it for a long time.”

Cuil representatives did not return phone calls.

Cuil , a new search engine developed by former Google employees, is taking the stage today. It's pronounced cool, but written Cuil, and annoyingly Web 2.0 looking, but it's also a new take on search. With about $33 million in venture funding, and a bunch of search brainiacs, can Cuil make it where so many have, sort of, just made it, in a so what sort of way? It may do if today's announcement doesn't crash the site.

Cuil's search index boast 120 billion Web pages, and Google recently claimed a trillion. Numbers that take into consideration the diversity and size of the Web, but also include the crappy one pagers that are put up by domain parkers and spammers. However, a quick play with Cuil, and you'll notice that it delivers search results in a column format that is more akin to a publication layout then, a typical search result listing.The Cuil folk claim to use datamining techniques to drill down deeper into the content of a page, and provide more visual keys to help rank the relevance of pages in a search result listing.

Three years after Google (NSDQ: GOOG) declared that its index was three times larger than any other search engine and then declined to cite a specific number to support that claim, it was widely believed that Google had tired of index one-upmanship and that it would no longer be measuring its index.

Well, Google has its yardstick in hand once again.

Two Google engineers on Friday said that Google's index of the Web now contains 1 trillion unique URLs.

That's a lot of URLs. However, there's a lot of chaff in there. Consider that "Google" alone returns 2,740,000,000 Google search results, "Yahoo" returns 2,930,000,000, and "eBay" returns 1,080,000,000. Add up the number of results generated by searching for the top 100 keywords and you'd have a significant fraction of 1 trillion.

Yahoo has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire the assets of Tensa Kft., better known as IndexTools.

IndexTools offers web analytics software with a focus on delivering a “highly customizable and scalable analytics platform.” The service competes with other analytics providers as well as Google Analytics and Microsoft adCenter Analytics.
