NEW YORK: Is Google planning to forge closer ties with Apple? There are indications. Google's chief executive Eric Schmidt almost said so when he was asked at a technology conference in San Francisco whether the company is planning to come out with a device to compete with Apple's iPhone.

He said Google and Apple are doing more and more things together and the two companies had similar goals and similar competitors.
