Firefox developer rebukes Google
One of the lead developers behind the Firefox browser has accused Google of abusing its powerful position in the search market to promote its growing range of products. In a blog posting this week, Blake Ross argued that Google was wrong to include plugs for its Calendar, Blogger and Picaso at the top of search results for terms like 'calendar', 'blogging' or 'photo sharing'. "This is clearly bad for competitors, and it's also a bad sign for Google," wrote Ross, 21, who has been one of the driving forces behind Firefox. Full story: ZDNet UK |
At one point or another, every technology user has experienced an application crash. In many cases trying to determine the exact cause of the crash can be as frustrating as the crash itself. Identifying the causality for crashes is a critical aspect of fixing the crash condition and making sure it doesn't re-occur. That's where Google's open source Airbag project comes in. According to Google, Airbag is a set of client and server components that implements a crash-reporting system. Airbag is made up of client-side libraries, a server-side processor library and build tools. In a discussion-list posting, Google Software Engineer Mark Mentovai explained that the client-side libraries generate dumps and assist in sending them to a crash server. The server-side process library in turn reads the crash dumps and transforms them into information that is useful for debugging. The build tools are able to make sense of native debugging information, turning the data into a format that is understandable by the processor. Currently the airbag project has no formal milestone releases on its Google Code page. That's not to say it doesn't have any users, or downloadable components for that matter. Developers can pull airbag components from the project's Subversion (SVN) source control code repository. Full article: internetnews.com |
Google product hits and misses in 2006
Google proudly touts that it does “one thing really, really well”: Search, as I discuss in “Google’s ‘1 percent’.” Google is nevertheless determined to do many more things really, really well, and profitably. Google CEO Eric Schmidt underscored at the Q3 earnings call: the blizzard of new product launches, on precedent for our scale and confusing to almost everyone, seems to create new opportunities for us every day…The diversity of our approach is one of our strengths, and we intend to keep going… more great products. Google Preps Blogger For The Enterprise
Google is taking yet another popular feature and retooling it for the enterprise. The Mountain View, Calif.-based search giant took Blogger out of beta last week, introducing features that are intended to appeal to business users. One such feature is added privacy settings, giving users the ability to restrict access to their blog postings. Users can do this by going to the permissions tab, selecting "only these readers" and then entering the e-mail addresses for people entitled to read the blog. Users can also enable multiple authors for the same blog account. Blogger now also supports syndication standards RSS 2.0 and Atom 1.0, and allows for individual feeds for comments to each separate post, allowing customers to create a single location for a conversation and collaboration. These types of features will allow companies to engage their staff and partners in a manner that is efficient and accessible while maintaining control over the audience for these communications. The future for Orange could soon be Google in your pocket
Google is on the move. The internet giant has held talks with Orange, the mobile phone operator, about a multi-billion-dollar partnership to create a 'Google phone' which makes it easy to search the web wherever you are. The collaboration between two of the most powerful brands in technology is seen as a potential catalyst for making internet use of mobile phones as natural as on desktop computers and laptops. Executives from Orange flew to Silicon Valley in California for a meeting at Google's headquarters, or 'Googleplex', to hold preliminary discussions about a joint deal. The companies believe that they have an affinity as brands that are perceived as both 'positive' and 'innovative'. Full article: Guardian Unlimited |
Open-source leader leaving Novell for Google
Jeremy Allison, a high-profile open-source programmer, has resigned from Novell because of objections over its patent deal with Microsoft and is moving to Google. In his resignation letter, Allison said Novell's patent pact with Microsoft has crippled the Linux seller's relations with the open-source community. At Google, he'll continue his work on Samba, the open-source project he helped launch. Samba is software that lets Linux servers share files on Windows networks. "Whilst the Microsoft patent agreement is in place there is nothing we can do to fix community relations...Until the patent provision is revoked, we are pariahs," Allison said in the letter, quoting from an earlier message he sent to Novell management. Allison joined Novell in 2005 after working at Hewlett-Packard. Groklaw, a site that monitors open-source legal affairs, published Allison's resignation letter Thursday. Allison on Thursday confirmed the letter's authenticity, saying he had sent it to an internal Novell mailing list, but declined to comment further on his departure from Novell. Google is a major open-source software user and participates in several open-source programming projects. Andrew Morton, a key lieutenant to Linux leader Linus Torvalds, works there, for example.
